Most will argue that the tipping point was the release of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit single on September 10th, 1991, and its accompanying album, Nevermind, two weeks later. The impact of that single and album was like an atomic bomb.
Erstwhile Screaming Trees frontman, Mark Lanegan, once told an amusing anecdote of hanging out with Kurt Cobain in a Seattle hotel room just as Smells Like Teen Spirit was reaching fever-pitch. “MTV was playing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ around the clock at the time,” Lanegan explained. “Kurt got into a heated argument with whoever he was talking to on the phone and pulled the phone cord out of the wall. Right then, ‘Teen Spirit’ came on MTV.”
